Outlook Express 5 & 6 - Email Configuration
To configure your Email account in Outlook Express 5 & 6:
Step 1.
- In Outlook Express, go to the Tools menu and select Accounts.
Step 2.
- Click the Mail tab. Click the Add button and choose Mail.
- Please note: If there are mail accounts for other service providers in the Accounts window that are no longer being used, please remove these accounts so they will not cause problems when sending and receiving email. If you are still using the other email accounts, you can leave them in here.
Step 3.
- Enter your name in the Display Name field. This is how your name will appear when you send email. Click Next.
Step 4.
- Enter the your full email address. Click Next.
Step 5.
- The incoming mail protocol is set to POP3 by default. This is the correct setting.
- Enter the appropriate mail servers in the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Server fields.
- Your domain name is the portion of your e-mail address that follows the @ symbol. (If your email address is billgates@microsoft.com, your domain name would be microsoft.com)
- Your incoming mail server should be pop.yourdomainname.com. (ex. pop.microsoft.com)
- Your Outgoing mail server should be smtp.yourdomainname.com. (ex. smtp.microsoft.com)
- After filling in the correct servers, click Next.
NOTE: Some internet providers, such as Cox, Earthlink, and MSN, are blocking users from using other mail servers to send mail. If you are able to receive mail, but not send mail, or you are getting a 550 error when sending mail, you will need to set the outgoing SMTP server to your internet providers server. Contact your internet service provider for this information. Your email account will function normally, you simply need to make this change to allow all outgoing messages to be delivered by your service provider. Step 6.
- Enter your full email address (username@domain.com) in the Account Name field and your password in the Password field. Usernames and passwords are case sensitive. Do NOT check "Log on using Secure Password Authentication." Click Next.
Step 7.
- Click Finish and then click Close to close the Accounts window. Outlook Express is now configured to receive email.
Step 8.
- If you are not using your Internet Providers Outgoing Mail Server, you will need to make one additional change to be able to send email. You need to enable SMTP Authentication.
- Select Accounts ( from the Tools menu. )
- Click the Mail tab.
- Select your email account and click the Properties button.
- Click the Servers tab.
- On the Servers tab, check the box that says My server requires authentication.
- Click the Settings button.
- Use the same settings as my incoming server should be checked.
- Click OK then click Close .
- Exit from Outlook Express
- The next time you start the program the new settings will take affect.
